Area Four
A metallurgical microscope with objectives from 5X to 100X is available for examination of microstructures. The images are projected on a large TV monitor for instructional purposes. Images can be captured to computer. A software measurement system illustrates and documents the sizes of microscopic features. Microphotographs and other visual aides are posted on the bulletin board to assist instruction.
A servo-hydraulic tester is used for demonstrations of KIC testing. This machine is used to propagate the fatigue crack and to perform the KIC test. A microscope is set up to observe the growth of the crack during testing and photographs can be made for distribution to the students.
