Torsion Tester
The specimen is cylindrical with square ends. These ends fit into fixtures on either side of the test section. The left fixture slides along a track to allow specimen installation. Its angular position is fixed to prevent movement of the left end of the specimen during the test. The right fixture is rotated by a variable speed motor. A load cell is used to monitor the torque data. Two rotary encoders are used to measure relative angular displacement of two cross sections of the specimen. The relative angular displacement is used to determine angular deformation. The torsion tester was designed by undergraduate students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering for their senior project.
