Creep Test

The Creep Apparatus
The Creep Apparatus

Materials deform with time under a constant load. This phenomenon is called creep. Dead weight creep testing machines are used in the lab to study the effect of creep on metals and polymers (tin, lead, and polyethylene are used in the lab because they creep readily at room temperature). Graphs are output on the computer data acquisition system that show displacement versus time. These data are used to calculate the creep exponent for the material.
